SUGAR SUGAR RUNE
Anime Review

Episode 1
"Chocolat, Hearts, and the Shooting Star"

It's time to enter the world of witches, ogres, wizards and hearts?

This is a very old anime that I've watched when I still a kid, believe it or not this was one of the classic Magical Girl animes after Sailor Moon. If you love magic, french and food (yes food) follow me with my reviews of the anime, Sugar Sugar Rune!

Let's begin this review by getting to know the first set of characters we get to meet in the first episode! Plus, it's just the first episode and it's already full of French LOLOL //kicked

Characters

Chocolat Meillure is the main protagonist in the series. She's a witch from the magical world and is a Queen Candidate. Her name means "Best Chocolate" in French. Like in every anime, there always has to be the spunky character that brings excitement and burst of color in the series. Chocolat is extroverted, lively, and has a little tomboyish side. She's the kind of character who isn't afraid of spiders, snakes and other creepy little things that lurk in both the magical and human world. But putting her very spunky attitude aside, she shows a side of laziness and isn't very enthusiastic with "studying" spells. Chocolate reminds me of those halloween witches who makes potions and has black cats for pets hahaha XD

Vanilla Mieux is the second Queen Candidate and Chocolat's best friend. Her name means "Better Vanilla" in French. Vanilla is more of the super shy, clumsy and the-one-who-has-the-lowest-self-esteem kind of character. She's the daughter of Queen Candy, who currently rules the Magical World. Basically she's your everyday super moe, super nice and super kawaii character in the anime. Vanilla is more calm and thinks before she acts, but unlike Chocolat, she's a bit more plain and is a crybaby at times. Whatever Chocolat likes, (spiders, snakes and other creepy little things) she's afraid of them. I usually like characters that are like Vanilla, but she's way too exaggerated which makes her appear weak and easy to manipulate.

Candy Meiux is the Queen of the Magical World and Vanilla's mother. She appears to be a very elegant and sweet kind of character, which I think adds a bonus because of her motherly endeavor. I can't say much about Queen Candy since she was barely given screen time. (you only see her in the first part of the episode) But hopefully we get to know more about her soon in future episodes

Rockin' Robin is the guardian assigned to watch over Chocolat and Vanilla during their stay in the human world. He's technically a lady's man and is very flirtatious. He works as a singer/rockstar and an actor in the human world, making him very popular among his female fans. In the first episode, you can clearly see that Robin easily gains hearts because of his charms. Apparently he's a wizard and is currently residing in the human world to gain crystal hearts to empower the Magical World.

Pierre de Neige is a student Chocolat meets during her first day in school and the current Student Council President. At the moment I can't describe him that much since he appears near the ending of the episode. Although I can tell that he has a charming yet cool personality. He appears to be cold in the first episode but definitely shows his interest in Chocolat after he returned the crystal heart she dropped.

Duke is Chocolat's familiar or some kind of pet of hers. He's a very lazy frog that can talk and usually orders Chocolat to do things for him. First impression, hooray for creepy frogs that talk; but then I realized the "kero" was starting to get annoying.

Blanca is Vanilla's familiar, who apparently has a diva complex. She likes to keep herself fabulous and applies make-up. (even if she's a mouse) She seems to dislike Chocolat and has a deep desire to make Vanilla the queen of the Magical World. Blanca can often be snobbish and mean, but putting that side behind, she cares very deeply for Vanilla and is very loyal.

Episode Review

First episode and it's already filled with magical girl sparkles everywhere hahaha XD The episode begins when Chocolat and Vanilla meet with Queen Candy to receive instructions for their trip in the human world. Seeing as though these two are queen candidates, they were told to collect hearts from human boys. The rule for this contest is that, whoever collects the most hearts will become the next queen of the Magical World.

The girls receive their heart holders (the pendants they're wearing) and their wands. That have French names that are too hard to remember and to type. After they jumped into the cauldron that tasted like CHOCOLATE. The competition for the Queen's throne immediately began.

So Chocolat and Vanilla found themselves in the human world and under Robin's care. Okay, Robin is definitely the character who constantly has rose petals flying around him or sparkles around him whenever he's around. I LIKE HIM ALREADY. I am very amused with his conceited side, that and how "cool" he acts. Must be part of the rockstar package.Though you gotta love that epic fail moment when Robin boasts how popular he is and in the end the girls have no idea who he is. Don't worry Robin, we can say that there's no television in the Magical World. But putting that aside, Robin explains to them the ways of collecting hearts and tells them the most highest rule of the Magical World.

-points at the picture- It seems like that's the rule every witch and warlock have to abide to whenever they're in the human world. So pretty much, if you fall in love with a human, you're going to get punished or will face the consequences.

We also get the chance to have insight with Chocolat's past. Apparently her mother died after the competition of becoming the next queen and she was raised by her grandfather. Her mother used to be a queen candidate as well, but she lost  and the crown was given to Vanilla's mother, Candy Meuix.

The next day...

Don't judge the picture, it's not what you think it is. Although it is very misleading XDD Robin transferred Chocolat and Vanilla to a human school so they can began capturing hearts. But he soon gets a truckload of teachers swooning over him and he soon used a spell used to take the crystal hearts from them. -insert dramatic casting- Another bonus of this spell, as Robin explains it, the person's feelings are subdued when their "hearts" are taken. So technically they temporarily forget what they were feeling. sheesh if only you can let feelings disappear like that nowadays.

By the way, the teacher in the middle is Chocolat and Vanilla's adviser

Alrighty then, putting Robin's ever so interesting entrance away. We find our girls introducing themselves in their class blah blah blah. So Chocolat ended her introduction with this.

While Vanilla....

She's so moe! God darn it, who cries when you introduce yourself to someone? Who cares, guys find it cute! //kicked But apparently it's a good tactic to get hearts since the crying, moe type = lots of orange hearts.

So in logic,
THAT ^ equals to THIS v
Screw you moe moe girls! //slapped

So with all the boys afraid of her, it didn't stop Chocolat from receiving her first heart! By the boy named Akira who accused them of being ALIENS. //flipped

And another added bonus, BISHIE ALERT! So we get to see the very cute Student Council President of Chocolat's school. He's not named in this episode yet, but who cares! He's hot :D and has a sexy diamond piercing on his right ear kyahaha //slapped

Wrapping this entry up. So I get the feeling Mr. Pres here has developed an interest to Chocolat and vice versa. Though I'm wondering why she said the crystal heart felt "cold" when he gave it back to her. The episode ends when Chocolat reveals she is determined to become the next queen of the Magical World, to fulfill the role her mother didn't achieve when she was still alive.

Onward to the next episode!

xoxo,
Nana
